Joshua 1:9
CourageWhat Does Joshua 1:9 Mean?
Joshua was about to step into the biggest role of his life. Moses, the legendary leader, had just died, and now Joshua was in charge of leading an entire nation into unknown territory. Talk about intimidating. And God's pep talk? Be strong. Be courageous. Don't be afraid. I'm with you wherever you go.
What's interesting is the opening line: "Have not I commanded thee?" God isn't making a suggestion. He's commanding Joshua to be brave. That might sound harsh, but it's actually deeply reassuring. God wouldn't command you to be courageous if He wasn't going to equip you for it. He's not setting you up to fail.
This verse is perfect for any season of transition — new job, new city, new chapter of life. The unknown is scary, but God's promise here is that He doesn't stay behind when you move forward. He goes with you. Wherever you end up, He's already there. Courage isn't the absence of fear; it's stepping forward anyway because you know you're not stepping alone.
Context
God spoke directly to Joshua after the death of Moses, as the Israelites prepared to cross the Jordan River and enter the Promised Land of Canaan after 40 years of wilderness wandering.
