Romans 10:9

Grace
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
— Romans 10:9 (KJV)

What Does Romans 10:9 Mean?

This verse lays out salvation in the simplest possible terms: confess and believe. That's it. Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. No elaborate rituals, no checklist of requirements, no waiting period. Confess and believe, and you're saved.

But don't mistake simple for shallow. "Confess with thy mouth" in the Roman world was a radical act. Declaring Jesus as Lord meant you were saying Caesar wasn't — and that could get you killed. It was a public, risky, all-in commitment. And "believe in thine heart" isn't just intellectual agreement. It's deep, settled conviction that changes how you live.

The resurrection is the key piece here. If God raised Jesus from the dead, it validates everything Jesus said and did. The resurrection is the proof of concept. When you believe that happened — truly believe it in your heart, not just nod at it mentally — everything else about Christianity falls into place. And the promise attached to that belief? Salvation. Not maybe. Not hopefully. "Thou shalt be saved."

Context

Paul wrote to Jewish and Gentile believers in Rome, explaining that salvation was accessible to everyone through faith, not just to those who followed the Jewish law. This simplified the path to God dramatically.
