Psalm 121:1-2
TrustWhat Does Psalm 121:1-2 Mean?
Picture a traveler on a long, dangerous road looking up at the mountains ahead. In ancient Israel, hills could mean different things — they could be where bandits hid, where pagan shrines stood, or simply where the journey got harder. And the traveler asks: where will my help come from?
The answer is immediate and confident: my help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Not from the hills themselves, not from any false god worshipped on those heights, not from human strength. From the Creator of everything. That's a pretty solid source of help.
There's something grounding about that phrase "which made heaven and earth." When you're looking at a mountain-sized problem, it helps to remember that your help comes from the one who made actual mountains. The God who spoke galaxies into existence is the same God you're calling on for help. He's not overwhelmed by your situation. He built the universe. Your problem, as big as it feels to you, is well within His capacity. Look up, and remember who's got you.
Context
This is one of the Songs of Ascents, psalms sung by Jewish pilgrims traveling uphill to Jerusalem for annual festivals. The journey could be dangerous, making this declaration of trust deeply practical.
