Matthew 5:16

Faith
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
— Matthew 5:16 (KJV)

What Does Matthew 5:16 Mean?

Jesus just told His followers they were the light of the world, and now He's saying: don't hide it. Let it shine. Live in a way that's visible — not for your own glory, but so people see your good works and give credit to God.

There's an important distinction here. Jesus isn't saying to do good things so people will think you're awesome. The goal isn't personal fame or reputation. The goal is that when people see how you live, they're drawn to God, not to you. Your life becomes a window that lets people see something bigger through it.

This is also a call to action. Light doesn't do anything useful when it's hidden under a basket. It's meant to illuminate, to help people see, to push back the darkness. If you're a person of faith, your life is supposed to make a visible difference in the world around you — in your family, your workplace, your neighborhood. Not in a preachy, holier-than-thou way, but through genuine kindness, integrity, and love that people can't help but notice.

Context

Part of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus spoke these words to His disciples and the gathered crowd on a hillside in Galilee, redefining what it meant to live as God's people in the world.
