Jesus
Son of God and Savior
Jesus of Nazareth is, without exaggeration, the most influential person in human history. Whether you're a believer or not, his life split the calendar in two and shaped civilizations across the globe. According to the Gospels, he was born in Bethlehem to Mary and Joseph, grew up in Nazareth as a carpenter's son, and lived in relative obscurity until he was about 30 years old.
His public ministry lasted roughly three years, but those three years changed everything. Jesus traveled through Galilee, Judea, and surrounding regions teaching, healing the sick, casting out demons, and challenging the religious establishment. His teachings — delivered through parables, sermons, and conversations — covered everything from forgiveness and love to justice and the nature of God's kingdom. The Sermon on the Mount alone contains some of the most quoted wisdom in human history: "Blessed are the meek," "love your enemies," "do not worry about tomorrow."
Jesus chose twelve ordinary men as his closest disciples — fishermen, a tax collector, a zealot. He spent time with people that religious leaders avoided: prostitutes, lepers, tax collectors, Samaritans. He consistently flipped social expectations upside down, saying things like "the last will be first" and "whoever wants to be great must be a servant."
His miracles were extraordinary: turning water into wine, feeding five thousand people with a few loaves and fish, walking on water, raising Lazarus from the dead. But it was his claims about himself that created the real controversy. He forgave sins (which only God could do), called God his Father in a way that implied equality, and accepted worship. The religious authorities saw him as a dangerous blasphemer.
Jesus was arrested, tried in a series of sham proceedings, and crucified under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. He died on a Friday and, according to the Gospels and the testimony of hundreds of witnesses, rose from the dead on Sunday. The resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian faith — Paul wrote that if it didn't happen, the whole thing falls apart. Jesus appeared to his disciples over 40 days before ascending to heaven, commissioning them to spread his message to the entire world. Two thousand years later, roughly a third of the planet follows him.
